Spirit Day: Building Community Beyond the Classroom
Spirit Day is a long-standing Lycée tradition where students come together for a day of teamwork and school spirit through a series of puzzles and games.
#Community
Across divisions, students progressively develop the habits of empathy, dialogue, accountability, and shared responsibility that prepare them to participate thoughtfully in a pluralistic society.
In Secondary School, these habits deepen through structured leadership opportunities, including student-led affinity and alliance groups. These groups provide intentional spaces for students to explore aspects of identity, engage across perspectives, and strengthen the ethical leadership skills central to the Lycée’s mission of graduating citizens of culture and courage. Students move from developing self-awareness within affinity spaces to contributing constructively to the broader school community.
Student activities are coordinated through The Coalition, a unified student leadership body composed of co-leaders from all affinity and alliance groups. The Coalition meets regularly to coordinate initiatives, strengthen cross-group dialogue, and provide structured feedback to school leadership.
By bringing leaders together across communities, The Coalition reinforces the school’s intercultural framework and ensures that student initiatives align with shared institutional goals. Through this structure, students practice collaborative governance and shared responsibility for the school’s culture.
Working alongside our student leaders, I see daily how structured dialogue and reflection transform confidence into responsible leadership. Our role is not simply to create spaces for expression, but to guide students in developing the habits of discernment, accountability, and shared responsibility that sustain a healthy community.
Student leadership at the Lycée is structured, mission-driven, and grounded in shared civic principles.
Participation in affinity and alliance groups is voluntary and open to all students who wish to engage in dialogue and leadership development. Each group is supported by a trained adult advisor, and members of the Lycée’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) team provide coaching in facilitation, dialogue practices, and program development. These groups operate within the school’s academic and civic framework and do not replace curricular instruction. Rather, they serve as structured leadership laboratories where students practice thoughtful engagement with complex social and ethical questions.
All groups operate within the school’s mission and intercultural framework and are grounded in principles of equal dignity, intellectual freedom, and shared responsibility.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging initiatives for parents and guardians are led by the Lycée’s parents’ association (Association des parents d’élèves du Lycée – APL) in collaboration with the school’s leadership team and DEIB Team.
With families representing many cultural and national backgrounds, conversations about belonging and intercultural understanding are approached thoughtfully and intentionally. These initiatives provide opportunities for dialogue, shared learning, and community-building, supporting families as partners in advancing the school’s mission and values.
