Arts & Music

From Preschool through Grade 12, the performing arts, visual arts, and music are at the very heart of the educational experience at the Lycée Français de New York.

We are convinced that artistic practice forges agile minds capable of creative problem-solving and, more importantly, fosters globally-minded citizens.

Much like bilingualism, immersion in the arts broadens one’s understanding of others and develops their empathy. This cultural competency stays with our students long after graduation, as many choose to pursue further studies and careers in design, art history, or the performing arts.

A Campus in New York City: An Open-Air Museum

One of our school’s unique advantages is the integration of New York City into our curriculum. The city is not merely our backdrop; it is our laboratory.

  • Educational Field Trips: From Preschool to Grade 12, students draw upon the city’s vast resources. Our art and history classes regularly visit The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met), MoMA, or the Tenement Museum, transforming theory into a tangible, lived experience.
  • A Global Cultural Stage: Learning continues beyond the school walls with regular excursions to BAM, Broadway, the Metropolitan Opera, the New York Philharmonic, and Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Visual Arts: From Creative Expression to Critical Thinking

From Elementary through Secondary school, the visual arts play a central role in classroom activities.

  • Elementary School: A dedicated studio allows students to develop fine motor skills and imagination through drawing, painting, sculpture, and ceramics. These projects are often interdisciplinary, blending art history and storytelling to bring learning to life.
  • Middle School: All students take fine arts classes. The program combines technical practice with critical analysis, enriched by regular museum visits.
  • High School: Students who choose artistic specialties deepen their skills in photography, film, or fine arts. They explore the social role of contemporary art and assert their own creative identities.

The Stage as a Learning Ground

Starting in Preschool, movement, song, and dance prepare our students to step into the spotlight of our auditorium.

  • Continuous Progression: All students in Grades 6 to 9 take music as part of the French curriculum. In our dedicated music room, students engage with music appreciation, composition, and theory, with many opportunities to perform in front of their peers throughout the year.
  • High School Specialization: Music or Theater electives allow high schoolers to train with a team of professional musicians and actors, with numerous opportunities to perform for their peers and outside guests.
  • Extracurricular Activities: After school, our theater, choir, band, and jazz band clubs offer students, regardless of level, the opportunity to cultivate their talent.

A Cultural Center at the Heart of Our School

The Cultural Center is physically located at the center of our campus, symbolizing its mission: to enrich the Lycée curriculum through the arts. Featuring a professional 354-seat auditorium, it is a gathering place where students, parents, teachers, and friends of the Lycée experience the magic of the arts.

The Center offers a program of lectures, films, and panel discussions designed in collaboration with faculty to deepen the themes addressed in class.

Each year through the Lycée’s signature Artist-in-Residence Program, invites artists from around the world to collaborate with an entire grade level at the Lycée for an immersive, weeklong creative experience. Together, they work on a project imagined by the artists themselves in partnership with teachers, always in the continuity of the school curriculum.
