Language development is central in Cycle 1. Students build oral expression in both French and English, as the foundation for reading and writing.
Children are immersed in language through stories, songs, and daily dialogue. Teachers model and encourage exchanges so students use language in authentic ways.
In Nursery, instruction is 100% in French, allowing children to hear, understand, and confidently use the language. Students also develop phonological awareness—sounds, rhymes, and syllables—as well as print awareness and graphisme (early handwriting and fine motor skills), all key components of the French curriculum.
In Pre-K and Kindergarten, instruction is 80% in French and 20% in English. Each class is led by two French-speaking teachers and a French-speaking assistant. During the daily English instruction period, two English-speaking teachers also work together in each classroom. In Kindergarten, students begin a structured literacy program in English while continuing to build early reading and writing skills in French, supporting strong, parallel development in both languages.
Since September 2025, our English Support Teacher and Literacy Coordinator strengthens the teaching of reading and writing while ensuring continuity in English language development from Kindergarten through Elementary school, through both targeted student support and teacher coaching.
French can be further reinforced through the Lycée’s after-school care and activities, Saturday French classes for families, and full-immersion Summer Camp for children ages 4 and up.
