Bernard Varney '48 has passed away at the age of 78. He was living in Tennessee with his wife of 38 years, Virginia. Born in Grenoble, France, to an American father and French mother, Bernard came to the Lycée in the late 30's, fleeing France with his mother on the last ship to sail out of Bordeaux. He graduated from Philips Andover Academy and Columbia University and served in the US Marine Corps. He was an expert bridge player, and an avid traveler, visiting over 50 countries on six continents. He is survived by two children and four step-children, as well as 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

David and I share our home with two standard poodles, ages 7.75 and almost 14 years. I retired this spring from my job as an analyst with the USG, so call anytime, as I am spending a lot of time at the computer working on a book, and would love to take a break to chat!!!"

I am also producing two plays ("Trouble in Paradise" in the Fall and "Le Concert Armenien ou le Proverbe Turc" in Montreal next April) and will be writing a blog for Le Monde this Summer, details on that to come still.

Marie-Noëlle Pierce (1985) is President of the Lycée's Alumni Board. She went on to study at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris and earned a graduate degree in French Literature from New York University. After working at France Telecom North America, she moved on to strategic consulting for the non-profit clients of American Express Tax and Business Services. In 2004, she became a Director at the French-American Foundation. A sustainer of the New York Junior League, she also sits on the board of the Committee of French Associations of New York.

After the Lycée I came to Canada to study business administration,(HEC). I now coach high level athletes in karate, I competed myself until the age of 41 had a successful career (5 time national champion in karate, and 13 times Quebec Champion)that kept me in shape all these years!
I'm married to a wonderful French woman, no kids yet! I started my own business in fitness, I'm a very much in demand personal trainer: www.syllafitness.com. I'm also a musician, and I play bass guitar for the Montreal band Heruba and many others!!!!

She has a B.A. in American History from Barnard College and a Master's Degree in Journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Erica was most recently a senior editor at Marie Claire, and has held staff positions at Parenting, Family Circle, and Ladies' Home Journal. She is currently a freelance health & lifestyles writer and has written for a variety of publications, including Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Self, Harper's Bazaar, In Touch Weekly, Gotham, Hamptons, and TONY. Sarah Ruffenach (2007) est maintenant à Sciences-Po et poursuit un double cursus qui lui permet de suivre à la fois un master de sciences et Sciences-Po. C'est une filière qu'ils ont développé depuis 4 ans pour essayer de capter des élèves scientifiques à Sciences-Po. Elle est maintenant en deuxième année et doit partir l'an prochain au Mexique pour un an pour accomplir sa troisième année.

Pourtant, j'ai vraiment l'impression que l'école m'a bien preparée pour cette université. Mes amis ici se plaignent car ils pensent qu'il y a trop de travail mais j'ai reussi à bien m'organizer. En ce moment, je fais partie du Dartmouth Women's Rugby Club (notre équipe va aux "finals" en Californie pendant les vacances de printemps), aussi du Dartmouth Emergency Medical Services, et puis je travaille dans un café onze heures par semaine.
Malheureusement, je n'ai pas trouvé assez de temps pour parler longtemps avec mon frere. Mais on s'appelle de temps en temps. Il va bien mais doit travailler vraiment beaucoup, puisqu'il prend de nombreux cours de neurologie et travaille dans un hopital. Il fait aussi partie d'une "secret society" - St. Anthony Hall.
