The new Lycée Français de New York campus, completed in 2003, showcases the combined efforts of developer Albanese Development, architects Polshek Partnership (now Ennead), and general contractor Sciame Construction in a concrete and metal structure that combines beauty and openness to create a building that is both functional and modern. The 354 seat state-of-the-art auditorium is the cultural center of the school, offering a unique and inviting space that hosts student theater, dance and music events, as well as outside presentations and performances.
Once divided into three separate locations on the east side of Manhattan, the school is now a single cohesive entity taking up a full city block between 75th and 76th Streets. The new building houses the upper and lower schools, which are joined together by common areas designed to welcome students and visitors. Additionally, the building boasts two gymnasiums with over 12,000 square feet of space providing two regulation basketball courts and facilitating a wide variety of other sports including volleyball, soccer and gymnastics. Fresh and healthy foods are prepared daily on-site in a 225-seat cafeteria with a full-service kitchen.
The school continues to evolve based on recommendations from the Building Committee, a joint team made up of the Head of School and other school administrators, trustees and parents who collaborate throughout the year to anticipate and accommodate the needs of new students and staff. Recent recommendations include the addition of SmartBoards and SmartTables to allow the school to remain at the leading edge of technology and tasking the original architectural firm with a space utilization study to help the school use all available space as we continue to grow.
With a vital role in creating the future of the Lycée, the Building Committee, in conjunction with the Board of Trustees, makes every effort to ensure that the school stays a safe and efficient work environment for students and staff and is capable of fulfilling the school’s mission statement.
